India Eases Coal Mine Approvals
The Indian government has made it easier for coal companies to start new mines.
Before, they had to ask a government office for permission to open a mine or even different parts of a mine.
This took a lot of time.
Now, the leaders of the coal companies can give themselves the permission, which will make things faster.
The government says this will help the coal industry work better and produce more coal.
However, the companies still have to follow all the other rules and tell the government what they are doing.
This change is part of a bigger plan to make it easier for businesses to operate in India.
The Indian government has amended the Colliery Control Rules, 2004 to simplify and speed up the approval process for opening coal and lignite mines.
The amendment removes the requirement for coal mine owners to seek prior permission from the Coal Controller’s Organisation (CCO) for opening mines, seams, or sections of a seam.
The authority to approve the opening of a mine, seam, or section of a seam has been delegated to the board of the concerned coal company.
The change is expected to reduce the time taken to operationalize a mine by up to two months, while maintaining regulatory oversight.
Companies must still obtain all necessary approvals from central and state governments and other statutory bodies before the board can approve mine openings.
