Omar Abdullah renews J&K statehood, special status demand on Independence Day

Omar Abdullah is the leader of Jammu and Kashmir, a region in the north of India.

He made a speech on India's Independence Day at a big public event.

In the speech, he asked for some special rights for Jammu and Kashmir to be given back.

Those rights were removed in the year 2019.

He thinks those rights are important for India's system where states share power.

He said the decision made 80 years ago, when leaders chose to make Jammu and Kashmir part of India, was the right decision.

He also talked about how some national tests for schools take away power from local leaders.

He believes people living in the part of Kashmir controlled by Pakistan would like to be part of India again if rights were restored.

He finished by promising to keep working for a new era of progress and development.
