Gujarat Revives Alang-Sosiya Ship Recycling Yard
The Gujarat government is working to revive the Alang-Sosiya Ship Recycling Yard, which has been struggling due to a global slowdown in the ship recycling market.
They plan to expand and modernize the yard to make it more competitive and environmentally friendly.
This includes adding more plots for ship recycling and improving infrastructure.
The government hopes this will bring more business and jobs.
However, workers are concerned because fewer ships are coming to the yard, and they often have to find other jobs when there's no work.
Despite these challenges, the industry believes there could be a revival soon.
Gujarat government plans to expand and modernize Alang-Sosiya Ship Recycling Yard to boost competitiveness and environmental sustainability.
Phase I of the project includes developing nine new ship-recycling plots and adding 88 hectares of land.
The expansion aims to double the yard's capacity from 4.5 million LDT to 9.0 million LDT per annum.
Currently, only 35-40 out of 128 allotted plots are operational due to a global market slowdown.
India accounts for 35% of the global ship-recycling market, with Alang-Sosiya handling 98% of India's ship recycling activity.
