Pakistan to Chair UNSC Taliban Sanctions Committee in 2025
Pakistan is going to be in charge of a United Nations group that makes sure sanctions (like freezing money or stopping travel) are followed for people and groups connected to the Taliban.
This group is part of the UN Security Council.
They will also help with another group that fights terrorism.
Other countries will assist Pakistan in these roles.
India has previously raised questions about Pakistan's record in regards to terrorism.
There are also new countries joining the council in the coming years.
Pakistan will chair the 1988 Taliban Sanctions Committee in 2025.
The committee enforces sanctions against individuals and entities associated with the Taliban.
Guyana and Russia will serve as vice-chairs for the Taliban Sanctions Committee.
Pakistan will also serve as vice-chair of the 1373 Counter-Terrorism Committee.
Five new non-permanent members were elected to the Security Council for 2026-2027.
