India to Borrow ₹3.84 Lakh Crore via Treasury Bills

The Indian government has announced plans to borrow ₹3.84 lakh crore through short-term treasury bills over the next three months.

This money will help the government cover its short-term expenses.

The government will sell these bills in weekly auctions, with each auction raising between ₹29,000 crore and ₹35,000 crore.

This amount is slightly less than what was borrowed in the same period last year.

The government can change the amount or timing of these auctions if needed, based on market conditions or other factors.

The plan for the previous quarter was to raise ₹2.47 lakh crore.

Additionally, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will conduct Open Market Operations (OMO) purchases of government securities worth ₹2 lakh crore in four tranches between December 29, 2025, and January 22, 2026.

This is part of the RBI's broader plan to inject liquidity into the banking system.

The RBI's actions aim to support the economy by making more money available for banks to lend.
