India's Banks Urged to Become Global Leaders
The government wants India's banks to become bigger and better, aiming for the top 10 worldwide.
Right now, India's banking system is small compared to the country's economy.
The idea is for banks to grow, possibly by merging with each other, and give more loans to small businesses.
While lending to these businesses is increasing, the government might help banks with special programs, like the ECLGS, to make sure they keep lending.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah wants Indian banks to scale up.
The goal is for Indian banks to be among the top 10 globally.
Currently, few Indian banks are in the top 100 by assets.
Emphasis on channeling credit to MSMEs.
Inorganic growth through mergers is being considered.
