Gujarat High Court stops demolition of century-old burial ground

Gujarat High Court stops demolition of century-old burial ground

Imagine a very old cemetery that people have used for a hundred years.

Government officials said the people taking care of the land were using it without permission.

They told the caretakers to tear down the buildings by a certain time, or else officials would do it themselves.

The caretakers went to a very important court called the Gujarat High Court to ask for help.

The court said the officials were moving too fast.

It explained that the officials' own earlier decision gave people 90 days to appeal, and that time had not even started yet.

So the court stopped the demolition just in time, on the very same day the deadline was about to end.

That means the old cemetery and its religious buildings get to stay safe for now.
