Why India Needs a Bigger Navy Across Sea Lanes

Why India Needs a Bigger Navy Across Sea Lanes

India is located in a very important part of the Indian Ocean.

Many ships traveling between the Gulf and East Asia pass near India.

India has a very long coastline and many islands to monitor.

Its coastline is now officially measured as about 11,100 kilometers long.

This larger number comes from a new measurement method, not from the coastline physically growing.

India also controls a large sea area called an exclusive economic zone.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are near the western entrance to the Malacca Strait.

Because India is close to these busy sea routes, the article says it needs a larger navy.
