Macaulay's Education Agenda and Calcutta Medical College
A long time ago, India's first medical college that taught Western medicine, called Calcutta Medical College, was started.
This college used English as the language for teaching.
A man named Thomas Macaulay wrote an important document called the Minute on Education, which said that English and Western education were better.
Another man, John Tytler, wanted to use Arabic instead of English for teaching.
Macaulay disagreed and said that English was better for teaching science.
The college did many important things, like the first dissection of a human body in India.
Even though some people say Macaulay's ideas were bad for India, his education policy helped India in many ways, like producing great doctors and leaders.
Today, India still uses English and Western education, and the college is still important.
Calcutta Medical College, India's first allopathy-focused medical institution, was established on January 28, 1835.
Thomas Macaulay's Minute on Education, advocating for English-medium Western-style education, was written five days after the medical college's commencement.
John Tytler, superintendent of the preceding Native Medical Institution, lobbied for Arabic as the medium of instruction, but Macaulay dismissed his arguments.
Macaulay's Minute broke the deadlock between Orientalists and Anglicists, leading to a resolution approving English-medium education.
The medical college's first student, Madhusudhan Gupta, performed the first human cadaver dissection in Indian medical education history on January 10, 1836.
