Romanian PM-designate Muresan loses confidence vote, deepening political crisis

Romania’s lawmakers rejected Siegfried Muresan as their proposed prime minister.

He received 182 votes, but needed 233.

This was the third failed nomination since a coalition government collapsed nearly five months ago.

The disagreement is making it difficult for Romania to form a government.

The Social Democrats may work with the hard-right Alliance for Uniting Romanians.

That party is critical of the European Union, NATO, and aid to Ukraine.

Romania also needs to reduce its large budget deficit.

If the crisis continues, the president could eventually call new elections, although he says that is a last resort.
