Indian Government Reassesses 300+ Schemes Ahead of Finance Commission
The Indian government is reviewing over 300 programs to make them better.
This is happening before a big financial review called the 16th Finance Commission gives its recommendations.
The goal is to ensure that the money spent on these programs is used wisely.
The Cabinet Secretary is asking different government departments to redesign or get rid of programs that aren't needed anymore.
They'll also figure out how much money each department will have for these programs.
Starting April 1, 2026, the programs will need to fit with the 16th Finance Commission's rules for sharing money between the central government and states.
The Centre is re-evaluating over 300 flagship schemes across multiple ministries.
The review precedes the recommendations of the 16th Finance Commission.
The initiative marks the start of a new five-year policy cycle.
Schemes will be realigned with the 16th FC's resource-sharing formula from April 1, 2026.
The Department of Expenditure will provide ministries with fiscal resource estimates.
