Karnataka FDA Wants Calorie Charts at Weddings, Big Events

In the state of Karnataka in India, a food-safety agency wants to help people know how much they are eating at big parties and weddings.

The agency plans to ask the people who cook the food to show how many calories are in each dish.

Calories are a way to measure how much energy is in food.

At big wedding meals, people often eat many different dishes all at once, like biryani, mutton curry, and sweets.

A person could eat as many as 5,000 calories in just one meal at such events.

That is a lot more than most people eat in a whole day.

The agency thinks showing the calorie count will help guests choose what and how much to eat.

Eating too much over time can cause health problems like high blood pressure and diabetes.

The advisory would apply to big events with more than 50 people.

The agency is also thinking about checking cloud kitchens and home chefs to make sure their food is safe.
