Assam's Electoral Rolls Undergo Special Revision, D-Voters Status Unchanged
The Election Commission is updating the voter lists in Assam.
This is a special process just for Assam and is different from how they update lists in other states.
Election helpers, called BLOs, will visit homes to check voter information.
They will update the records for most voters, noting people who have passed away or moved.
They will also help new voters register or fix any errors in existing entries.
However, a group of voters called 'D-voters', whose citizenship is doubtful, will not have their status changed during this update.
Their names will stay on the list as 'D-voters' unless a court or a special tribunal decides otherwise.
This issue is related to Assam's history with migration and citizenship checks.
The special update will finish, and the new voter list will be ready by February 10, 2026, before the state elections in April 2026.
The Election Commission of India is conducting a special revision of electoral rolls in Assam, distinct from processes in other states.
Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will perform house-to-house verification, updating details, and accepting applications for new voters or corrections.
The status of 'D-voters' (doubtful voters), estimated at around 96,987 people, will remain unchanged in the electoral roll during this revision.
Changes to 'D-voter' status, including removal of the 'D' tag, require an order from a foreigners tribunal or court.
The final electoral roll for Assam will be published on February 10, 2026, ahead of the April 2026 state assembly elections.
