Sitharaman Clarifies GST Rules for Apartment Associations
The Finance Minister explained how apartment associations and residents pay taxes.
Apartment groups need to register for a tax called GST if they make a lot of money, or if the fees they charge for taking care of the building are high.
If the group charges more than ₹7,500 each month per person for upkeep, they have to pay GST.
The people who live in the apartments do not have to pay GST.
The government also said that if a person owes taxes, they can pay them back with a smaller fine if they pay quickly, and the government has programs to help taxpayers understand their taxes.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman clarified GST rules for apartment associations.
Apartment associations must register for GST if turnover exceeds ₹20 lakh annually (₹10 lakh in special states).
GST applies if maintenance fees exceed ₹7,500 per member monthly; residents do not pay.
The exemption limit was raised from ₹5,000 to ₹7,500 per month based on GST Council recommendations.
Taxpayers can pay due taxes with a reduced or no penalty if paid within a specified timeframe.
