India Draws $1.4 Billion Toward Global Chip Hub Ambition

India wants to become an important place for making and designing computer chips.

Over the past year, investors put $1.4 billion into India’s semiconductor industry.

More than $400 million went to companies that design chips without manufacturing them.

Assembly and testing plants received the biggest share of the funding.

The government is helping by offering up to 50% financial support for some factories and packaging plants.

Investors are also supporting businesses that provide chemicals, gases, and wafer-processing services.

However, chip factories need dependable electricity, very clean water, and special transportation systems.

India also needs to train tens of thousands of engineers.

These efforts are meant to help India participate more strongly in global technology supply chains.
