India's Judicial System Faces Judge Shortage
India has a big problem with its courts.
There are not enough judges to handle all the cases.
Right now, there are only 22 judges for every million people, but experts say there should be 50 judges for every million people.
This means many cases take a long time to be solved.
The government is trying to fix this by adding more judges and using technology to make things faster.
They have also been working to make the courts more diverse by appointing more women and people from different backgrounds as judges.
But there are still many people waiting in prison for their cases to be decided, which shows how much work still needs to be done.
India's judge-to-population ratio is 22 judges per million people, far below the recommended 50.
There are significant vacancies in the High Courts, with only 814 out of 1,122 sanctioned judges currently working.
The Supreme Court has 33 out of 34 sanctioned judges, while District and Subordinate Courts have 20,833 judges.
The government is implementing initiatives like the e-Courts Mission Mode Project to reduce case pendency and improve court infrastructure.
Between 2018 and 2026, 847 judges were appointed, including 130 women and representatives from various communities.
