Why Pellets Can Make the Biggest Difference in Shooting
In shooting, very small differences can change a competitor’s result.
Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar says choosing the right pellet can change his qualification score greatly.
He compares scores of 587 and 595.
One score may only get a shooter into the final, while the other can approach a world-record level.
Shooters receive decimal scores when their pellet lands close to the center.
The 10 ring at 10 metres is extremely small, about the size of a pin.
The pellet’s size and shape matter because it must work well with the rifle barrel.
YP Shirsat says testing the barrel and pellet together is essential for accuracy.
Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar says pellet choice can separate qualification scores of 587 and 595.
The higher score could place a shooter near world-record territory, while the lower score may barely qualify for a final.
Decimal scoring makes tiny differences crucial in 10-metre shooting, where the 10 ring is about 0.5 millimeters wide.
Pellets measure 4.5 millimeters in diameter and can score from 10.0 to 10.9 depending on where they touch the target.
YP Shirsat says the rifle barrel and pellet are the two most important parts of the accuracy equation.
