Karnataka CM Says Only 0.6 TMC Water Released to Tamil Nadu
The chief minister of Karnataka, D.K. Shivakumar, said that in July no water was released from the state’s reservoirs, only a small amount of 0.6 tmc went to Tamil Nadu.
This is the smallest amount in a hundred years.
He also told the people that the reservoirs are mostly full: Harangi is 95% full, Kabini 83%, Krishnaraja Sagar 36% and Hemavathy 67%.
He asked groups that wanted to hold a protest called a bandh to cancel it, saying it would not help.
Karnataka has been following a Supreme Court order to release water to Tamil Nadu, but some excess water has also flowed into the Bay of Bengal.
Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar said no water was discharged from Karnataka reservoirs in July; only 0.6 tmc flowed to Tamil Nadu.
The 0.6 tmc is the lowest amount to reach Tamil Nadu in a century, according to Shivakumar.
Reservoir levels: Harangi 95% full, Kabini 83%, Krishnaraja Sagar 36%, Hemavathy 67%.
Shivakumar urged pro-Kannada groups to cancel a planned bandh on Aug 13, saying it would not solve the water issue.
Karnataka has complied with a Supreme Court order to release 177.25 tmc to Tamil Nadu, with 400 tmc flowing due to excess water.
