Trump Backs Down on Greenland Tariffs
Mark Rutte, the head of NATO, talked to the US President Donald Trump.
They discussed how to keep the Arctic region safe.
Mr. Rutte said they did not talk about whether Greenland should stay part of Denmark.
Instead, they focused on how to protect the Arctic from changes and activities by China and Russia.
Mr. Rutte mentioned they have a good plan to start working on these issues, but there's still a lot of work to do before any final deal is made.
Meanwhile, Trump initially threatened tariffs on European countries, including France and Germany, for protesting his efforts to annex Greenland.
However, after meeting with Rutte, Trump walked back on his threat and announced a framework for a deal regarding Greenland and the Arctic.
Denmark, however, has made it clear that Greenland's sovereignty is not up for negotiation and that any discussions must respect the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark.
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte denied discussing Greenland's sovereignty with US President Donald Trump, focusing instead on Arctic security and the activities of China and Russia in the region.
Trump initially threatened tariffs on eight European countries, including France and Germany, for protesting his efforts to annex Greenland, but later walked back on the threat after meeting with Rutte.
France and Germany have ruled out boycotting the FIFA World Cup 2026 in the US despite Trump's tariff threats, with their sports ministers emphasizing the importance of keeping sports separate from politics.
Denmark has called for constructive talks on Arctic security that respect the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark, insisting that Greenland's sovereignty is not negotiable.
Trump has argued that US control of Greenland is necessary for national security and that the US was wrong to 'give back' Greenland after World War II, despite Denmark's consistent rejection of any proposals to transfer the territory.
