Why Southern Women-Led Action Films Beat Bollywood’s Alpha
The article compares one Hindi action movie with several South Indian movies.
Alpha featured female super-soldiers but reportedly did not perform well.
Maa Inti Bangaaram was a smaller Telugu movie starring Samantha Ruth Prabhu.
It became successful by mixing comedy, family drama and exciting action.
Its heroine protects her husband’s family while hiding her past as an assassin.
Other films, including DC: The Bloody Valentine, Blast and Thudakkam, also give women important action roles.
These women are shown as powerful characters rather than copies of male heroes.
The article says their simpler stories connected with ordinary audiences.
It also suggests that the huge budget and male-star focus of Toxic may limit how much its director can change the usual action-film formula.
Maa Inti Bangaaram, led by Samantha Ruth Prabhu, earned Rs 125 crore on a reported Rs 25-crore budget.
The article contrasts Alpha’s reported failure with the stronger performance of several recent South Indian action films.
Maa Inti Bangaaram, DC: The Bloody Valentine, Blast and Thudakkam feature women who actively drive their own action stories.
The article argues that Alpha relied on a familiar spy-film formula involving Pakistan and the Line of Control.
Toxic is being made on a far larger budget, making it less likely that director Geetu Mohandas can radically reshape its gender dynamics.
