Election Commission SIR Dispute Sparks Claims of Vote Manipulation

Election Commission SIR Dispute Sparks Claims of Vote Manipulation

The Election Commission is reviewing voter lists through a process called the Special Intensive Revision, or SIR.

A report said two election commissioners disagreed with other decisions many times.

Their concerns reportedly involved adding, removing, and restoring voters’ names.

They also reportedly questioned changes to a voter-registration form and the handling of voter data.

Opposition politicians said these reports raised serious questions about the fairness of elections.

The Bharatiya Janata Party said disagreements can be a normal part of democratic discussion.

The Election Commission said there was no internal breakdown.

It maintained that all final decisions, including those about SIR, were unanimous.
