High-Level Committee Formed to Strengthen FPOs in Tamil Nadu
The Indian government has created a special team to help farmer groups in Tamil Nadu.
These groups, called Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), help farmers work together to sell their crops and get better prices.
The team will look at how these FPOs are working and suggest ways to make them stronger.
They will focus on important crops like bananas and turmeric.
The team includes experts from different organizations and the Tamil Nadu government.
They have two months to finish their report and suggest improvements.
A high-level committee has been formed to strengthen FPOs in Tamil Nadu, where over 460 FPOs have been established under a government scheme.
The committee includes representatives from Nabard, Nafed, SFAC, the Tamil Nadu government, ICAR’s NRCB, FPOs, NGOs, and the Agriculture Ministry.
The panel will examine key issues such as institutional governance, business operations, technical support, marketing challenges, and capacity-building.
Special focus will be given to crops and farming systems important to Tamil Nadu, including banana, turmeric, coconut, tapioca, and natural/organic farming systems.
The committee has been asked to submit its report within two months.
