Sibal opposes simultaneous elections citing federalism
Kapil Sibal, a senior lawyer and member of the Rajya Sabha, recently spoke to a group of lawmakers about an idea called 'One Nation, One Election.'
This idea is about holding elections for the national parliament (Lok Sabha) and state assemblies at the same time.
Sibal said he doesn't agree with this idea because he thinks it would take away some rights from state governments.
He believes it might not follow the rules of the Constitution, which is like the rulebook for the country.
The group, led by a member of the BJP, had a good discussion about this idea.
They plan to meet again on December 17 to talk more.
The idea is being discussed because some people think it would make elections easier and more efficient.
But Sibal and others worry it might not be fair to all parts of the country.
Kapil Sibal opposed simultaneous elections, citing concerns about federalism and state rights.
The Joint Committee of Parliament, chaired by P P Chaudhary, held a meeting on Wednesday to discuss the 'One Nation, One Election' Bills.
Sibal argued that the Bills would curtail the rights of state governments and not stand the Constitutional test.
The Bills aim to synchronize Lok Sabha and Assembly elections by curtailing the terms of state Assemblies.
The 23rd Law Commission has stated that the Bills do not disturb the basic structure of the Constitution regarding federalism and voter rights.
