Karnataka Cabinet Expansion Sparks MLA Resignations
In Karnataka, the chief minister D K Shivakumar added 20 new ministers to his government.
Two Congress lawmakers, Yashavantarayagouda V Patil and Gopala Krishna Beluru, were not chosen.
They felt the list favored people connected to former leaders and left out ordinary members.
They resigned from the assembly to protest.
Their supporters staged protests in Bengaluru.
The governor gave oath to the new ministers, while the deputy speaker accepted Patil’s resignation letter.
The chief minister asked the lawmakers to be patient and promised future chances.
The resignations caused a stir in the state’s politics.
Two Congress MLAs, Yashavantarayagouda V Patil (Indi) and Gopala Krishna Beluru (Sagar), resigned after being excluded from D K Shivakumar’s cabinet expansion.
The expansion added 20 ministers, with 19 sworn in; the list was finalized by the AICC and included many former Siddaramaiah ministers.
Patil and Beluru cited favoritism toward former chief minister families and a lack of new faces as reasons for their resignations.
Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot administered oaths to the new ministers at Lok Bhavan, while Deputy Speaker Rudrappa Lamani received Patil’s resignation letter.
The resignations prompted protests by supporters and calls from the CM for patience and future opportunities for excluded MLAs.
