RSS Chief, Centre Clash Over Creamy Layer in Reservation Debate

RSS Chief, Centre Clash Over Creamy Layer in Reservation Debate

In India, there is a rule called reservation that saves some school seats and jobs for people from groups that were treated unfairly for a long time.

Many years ago, this rule was made to give those groups a fair chance.

Recently, people started arguing about the creamy layer — families in these groups who are now rich.

Should rich families still get the special help?

The chief of the RSS, Mohan Bhagwat, said people who have done well should give up their reservation benefits on their own.

But the government told the Supreme Court that it will not remove these benefits for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

A TV debate show called India Upfront talked about this big question.

Some people said choosing the most talented person is more important.

Others said fairness and making up for past wrongs matter more.

Many wondered if politicians are scared of losing votes and are avoiding fixing the system.
