India Initiates Nationwide Special Intensive Voter Roll Revision
Imagine the list of people allowed to vote is like a school attendance sheet.
The Election Commission is doing a big check-up, like a special cleaning day, for this list in many parts of India, including West Bengal and Indore.
People called Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will visit homes to make sure everyone who should be on the list is there and that nobody who shouldn't be is included.
They will help people fill out forms and update information, especially if someone has moved.
This helps make sure the voting list is correct.
Some political parties in West Bengal are concerned about this process, worried that genuine voters might be removed or that it's being used unfairly.
They are questioning who has the final say on who is a voter.
The Election Commission says they will be careful, help voters, and that the process is to make the list accurate and fair for everyone.
There are also rules about transferring government officials during this time to ensure fairness.
Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists has commenced in Madhya Pradesh (Indore) and is a nationwide initiative involving multiple states and Union Territories.
Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will conduct door-to-door surveys from November 4 to December 4 to update voter information and ensure list accuracy.
Political parties in West Bengal have raised concerns about the ECI's authority to determine citizenship and potential deletion of genuine voters.
The revision process includes a timeline for draft list publication (December 9), accepting claims and objections (December 9 - January 8, 2026), and final list publication (February 7, 2026).
The SIR imposes restrictions on transferring election-related officers, requiring prior approval from the Election Commission.

Political Parties (TMC, CPI(M))
TMC and CPI(M) representatives questioned the ECI's authority to determine citizenship status and expressed concerns that genuine voters might be deleted, with TMC threatening protests if names are removed.
Election Commission of India (ECI) & Officials
CEO Manoj Agarwal stated that Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will guide voters in filling forms and that Aadhaar cards will be valid. He assured that no genuine voter's name would be deleted and the process is aimed at ensuring a transparent and accurate voter list.
Purpose and Scope of SIR
Political Parties (TMC, CPI(M))
TMC's Abhishek Banerjee criticized the SIR as 'Silent Invisible Rigging,' suggesting it's a method for the ruling party to select voters rather than enabling voters to select the government. He questioned why it's being conducted in only West Bengal and not in Assam, and noted the accelerated timeline compared to past revisions.
Election Commission of India (ECI) & Officials
District Election Officer Shivam Verma stated that the SIR is intended to ensure a transparent and accurate voter list, prevent eligible citizens from being left out, and avoid the inclusion of ineligible persons, all in accordance with ECI guidelines.
