India sees four-fold rise in high-income taxpayers

India sees four-fold rise in high-income taxpayers

In India, the number of people who earn more than Rs 100 crore per year has gone up a lot in the last five years.

The government told the Lok Sabha that in the year 2025-26, 576 people earned this much, which is almost four times more than the 142 people in 2021-22.

The number went up and down a bit in between but kept increasing overall.

The government also said that there is no official definition of a 'billionaire' in the Income-Tax Act, 2025.

Some people think this shows that India's economy is growing, while others think it shows that a few people are getting much richer while others are not.
