Budget 2026: High-Speed Rail and Karnataka's Criticisms
The Finance Minister of India, Nirmala Sitharaman, has proposed to build seven new high-speed train routes in the country.
These routes will connect major cities like Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Varanasi, and Siliguri.
Right now, India is building its first bullet train between Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
Once finished, this train will take less than two hours to travel between these two cities.
The Railway Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, says this will make it easy for people to travel between cities for work and other activities.
The project has already given jobs to many people.
The new high-speed train routes will help connect more cities and make travel faster and easier.
The budget also focuses on making villages and farmers stronger by giving them more money and support.
It includes plans to improve education, create jobs, and develop tourism and infrastructure in different parts of India.
However, some officials from Karnataka are not happy with the budget.
They say that the proposed train routes do not benefit Karnataka much and that the budget does not address the state's specific needs and contributions.
They want more support for projects like the Upper Krishna Project and defense corridor projects.
Despite these criticisms, the budget aims to make India's economy stronger and create more jobs.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman proposed seven high-speed rail corridors in Budget 2026, including Mumbai-Pune, Pune-Hyderabad, and Delhi-Varanasi.
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train, India's first, is under construction and expected to reduce travel time to less than two hours.
Around one lakh people have benefited from employment generated during the construction phase of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project.
The budget allocates ₹1,62,671 crore for agriculture and allied sectors and ₹2,73,108 crore for rural development to make Indian farming stronger and farmers self-reliant.
Karnataka officials criticize the budget for not addressing the state's specific demands, such as the Upper Krishna Project and defense corridor projects, and for not benefiting Karnataka significantly with the proposed high-speed rail corridors.
