Retail Investors Boost Mid, Small Cap Funds
Even though the stock market has been up and down in the last two years, more and more regular people in India are putting their money into mid and small cap mutual funds.
These are funds that invest in medium-sized and small companies.
The number of people investing in these funds has gone up a lot.
For example, mid cap fund investors grew from 15.3 million to 25.5 million, and small cap fund investors grew from 20.3 million to 28.7 million.
These funds have also given good returns over the years, which makes people feel good about investing in them.
However, experts say that the prices of these funds are quite high now, so investors should be careful.
If the companies don't make as much money as people expect, the prices could go down, and the returns might not be as good in the future.
Retail participation in mid and small cap mutual funds in India has significantly increased despite market volatility.
Mid cap fund folios rose from 15.3 million to 25.5 million, and small cap fund folios increased from 20.3 million to 28.7 million between June 2024 and June 2026.
Mid and small cap funds have delivered strong long-term returns, with CAGRs ranging from 16.33% to 18.76% over 3-5 years.
Assets under management (AUM) for mid cap funds grew from Rs. 4.32 lakh crore to Rs. 5.06 lakh crore, and for small cap funds from Rs. 3.55 lakh crore to Rs. 4.30 lakh crore.
ICRA warns of valuation risks, suggesting future returns will depend on sustained earnings growth rather than further valuation expansion.
