Australian Shares Climb on Resource Strength, ANZ Recovers
Imagine the stock market is like a big store where people buy and sell pieces of companies.
On Monday, the store was doing better because the prices for things like metals and oil went up.
This made the companies that dig up or sell these things see their value increase.
One of the big banks, ANZ, had a bit of a tough year with lower profits, but people in the market still liked how it was doing and its stock price went up a little.
Also, a very important person from Australia's central bank said they need to keep making it a little harder for people to borrow money to keep prices from going up too fast.
Meanwhile, a different stock market in New Zealand went down.
Australian shares rose on Monday, with the S&P/ASX 200 index gaining 0.3%.
Stronger prices for copper and global oil boosted gains in resources and energy stocks.
ANZ Group recovered from early losses to trade higher, despite reporting a 14% drop in annual cash earnings.
Reserve Bank of Australia Deputy Governor Andrew Hauser highlighted the ongoing challenge of inflation and the need for tight monetary policy.
Gold stocks saw significant gains, reaching their highest point since late October.
