Experts Urge Greater Resident Participation in Chennai’s Urban Future
Experts met to discuss how Chennai should grow in the future.
They said city officials should not make all decisions alone.
People living in neighbourhoods should help identify problems and suggest solutions.
Chennai’s population and need for homes are increasing.
The city is considering new satellite towns and jobs outside Chennai to reduce pressure.
Officials also want to use land more efficiently and build affordable homes.
Some experts warned that construction must respect wetlands and natural drainage paths.
They said residents should help care for their neighbourhoods and be treated as important partners.
Ideas collected at the event will be shared with decision-makers and civic groups.
Urban experts said residents should have a larger role in neighbourhood-level planning and decision-making.
The CMDA’s Third Master Plan proposes decentralised development, six satellite towns and a metropolitan economic growth strategy.
Chennai adds about 22,000–23,000 dwelling units annually, below figures reported for Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Mumbai.
Experts called for compact, higher-density development, affordable housing and better use of land and floor space index.
Speakers also urged planning that protects natural drainage systems and addresses flooding, encroachments, parking and street vending.

The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority emphasised a metropolitan-level master plan, decentralised development and satellite towns to manage population and infrastructure pressure.
Neighbourhood-Led Planning and Stewardship
Neighbourhood advocates said decentralisation should also reflect the distinct character and needs of individual neighbourhoods, with residents helping shape decisions.
Who should lead planning
Metropolitan Planning and Decentralisation
Officials and planners said coordinated, system-wide planning is needed to address housing, employment, land use and infrastructure across the metropolitan region.
Neighbourhood-Led Planning and Stewardship
