Belgium Rejects Choksi's Extradition Appeal
Mehul Choksi is a man who is accused of a big financial crime in India.
He ran away to another country, Antigua and Barbuda, and then to Belgium.
India wanted him to come back to face trial.
The highest court in Belgium, called the Court of Cassation, said no to Choksi's request to stay in Belgium.
This means he might have to go back to India.
The court said that if he goes back, he will get a fair trial and won't be treated badly.
India asked Belgium to send him back on August 27, 2024, based on some official orders from a court in India.
Choksi has been trying to avoid being sent back to India since 2018.
His nephew, Nirav Modi, is also involved in the same case and is currently in jail in London.
Belgium's Court of Cassation rejected Mehul Choksi's appeal against extradition to India.
The Antwerp Court of Appeal had previously upheld India's extradition request, terming it 'enforceable'.
Choksi is the main accused in a Rs 13,000 crore fraud case involving Punjab National Bank.
The Court of Appeals ruled that Choksi faces no risk of an unfair trial or ill-treatment if extradited.
India sent an extradition request to Belgium on August 27, 2024, based on arrest warrants issued by a Mumbai special court.
