US Revokes More Than 250,000 Visas Under Trump
The United States says it has canceled more than 250,000 visas since Donald Trump returned as president.
A visa is permission for a foreign visitor to enter or stay in the country for a particular reason.
Officials say visas were canceled for breaking visa rules, committing crimes, fraud, security concerns and misuse of immigration programs.
About 2,300 cancellations involved birth tourism, when someone travels to the United States mainly to give birth.
Many earlier cancellations followed contact with law enforcement.
The crimes mentioned included assault, drunk driving, theft, drug offenses, sexual assault, child abuse and fraud.
The government also canceled visas belonging to 27 Latin American officials, former officials and relatives over corruption allegations.
It has considered canceling as many as 200,000 business and tourist visas held by people who later applied for asylum.
The State Department says it has revoked more than 250,000 visas since Donald Trump returned to the White House.
Officials cited visa violations, criminal activity, fraud, calls for violence, national-security threats and misuse of the immigration system.
About 2,300 revocations were linked to birth tourism, though the department has not released a complete breakdown.
More than 175,000 visas had been revoked by August, with many cases following encounters with law enforcement.
The administration has considered revoking up to 200,000 business and tourist visas held by later asylum applicants.
