Telugu States Lag in University Township Selection Race
The government wants to create five large university townships in India.
These townships would bring colleges, companies, research centers, and startup support together.
They should be built close to important industrial and transport areas.
Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have not yet met the main conditions as strongly as some other states.
States must compete by submitting detailed plans rather than being chosen automatically.
Gujarat’s GIFT City is ahead because two Australian universities already operate there.
Other states also have foreign universities planning campuses.
The Union Education Minister is asking students, parents, teachers, and institutions for suggestions before finalizing the rules.
Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are reportedly far behind in qualifying for the University Township Initiative for 2026-27.
The initiative will select five integrated academic hubs near major industrial and logistics corridors.
States must submit competitive proposals covering land, institutional cooperation, industry partnerships, innovation, and foreign university campuses.
GIFT City in Gujarat is considered a frontrunner because it already hosts Deakin University and the University of Wollongong.
Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu have an advantage through foreign university investments and approved campuses.
