Three Killed in Karnataka Forest Shootout Over Poaching; Families Protest

A few men went into a forest in the Indian state of Karnataka.

Forest guards thought the men were hunting wild animals without permission, which is called poaching.

The guards say they found the men with guns and bags of deer meat.

During a confrontation, three of the men were shot and died.

The forest guards say the men tried to shoot at them first and that the guards fired to protect themselves.

But the families of the men are very upset and say the guards should not have killed them.

Families and villagers held protests and blocked a road, asking for an investigation and money to help the families.

The police opened a case against the forest officers, treating the shooting as possible murder.

The state's Chief Minister also ordered a formal inquiry.

Now everyone is waiting for the reports to find out exactly what happened.
