Venezuela Releases 88 More Prisoners After Protests

Venezuela Releases 88 More Prisoners After Protests

Venezuela's government has freed 88 more people who were arrested after protests following the country's election in July 2024.

This is the second time in two weeks that the government has released prisoners, with 99 people freed earlier on December 26.

The total number of people released in these two actions is 187.

However, some groups that help people in need say that the government might not have released as many people as it claims.

They estimate that around 900 political prisoners are still in jail in Venezuela.

The government says it does not hold political prisoners but rather imprisoned politicians who were trying to cause trouble in the country.

These releases are happening while the U.S. is putting pressure on Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro to step down.

The U.S. has also increased its military presence in the Caribbean and taken action against boats near Venezuela's coast that it says were carrying drugs.
