Maduro Invokes Head-of-State Immunity in U.S. Drug Case

Nicolas Maduro is asking a U.S. judge to throw out criminal charges against him.

He says leaders of countries should usually be protected from prosecution in other countries.

The United States says it has not recognized him as Venezuela’s president since 2019.

U.S. courts have rarely handled criminal cases involving foreign leaders.

A similar immunity argument by Manuel Noriega was rejected in 1990.

Maduro has pleaded not guilty.

The judge will hear arguments about his request on November 17.

If the case continues, the trial is scheduled to begin on June 1, 2027.
