Delhi Police Registers FIRs for Wrong-Side Driving
The Delhi Police has started registering FIRs for people driving on the wrong side of the road.
This is the first time this has happened in Delhi.
The police say that driving on the wrong side is very dangerous and causes many accidents.
They hope that by registering FIRs, people will be more careful.
The fine for driving on the wrong side is Rs 5,000, but an FIR can lead to a prison term of up to six months, a fine of Rs 1,000, or both.
The police will not register an FIR for every case, but they will do so when the driving is very dangerous or involves repeat offenders.
In 2025, there were over 3 lakh cases of wrong-side driving, which is much higher than the previous year.
The police will also consider if the violation was due to a mistake, such as lack of signage, before deciding to file an FIR.
Delhi Police registered three FIRs for wrong-side driving and rash driving under BNS Section 281 and the Motor Vehicles Act.
The FIRs were registered at Delhi Cantonment, Kapashera, and Vasant Kunj South police stations on January 3 and January 7, 2025.
Wrong-side driving cases have increased significantly, with 3,05,843 cases reported in 2025, up from 2,49,210 in 2024.
The fine for wrong-side driving is Rs 5,000, but an FIR under BNS Section 281 can result in up to six months imprisonment, a Rs 1,000 fine, or both.
The police will register FIRs in cases where the driving is particularly dangerous, endangers lives, or involves repeat offenders.
