New sugarcane varieties aim to boost Uttar Pradesh farmers’ prosperity

Researchers in Uttar Pradesh created four new types of sugarcane.

The new types are meant to help farmers grow more sugarcane.

They may also help mills recover more sugar from the crop.

Each type could produce about 90 to 100 tonnes per hectare.

The plants can resist or tolerate red rot, a serious sugarcane disease.

They also grow strongly soon after planting.

Their ratoon crops may produce well after the first harvest, which can lower future farming costs.

These improvements are expected to make sugarcane farming more productive and profitable.
