Israel Recognizes Somaliland as Independent State
Israel has become the first United Nations member state to officially recognize Somaliland as an independent country.
This happened more than 30 years after Somaliland declared independence from Somalia.
Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar signed the recognition declaration, while Somaliland's President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi signed on behalf of his country.
Somaliland had a brief period of recognition in 1960 by Israel and 34 other countries before uniting with Somalia.
This time, Israel is the first to recognize Somaliland's independence.
They plan to work together on things like farming, health, technology, and the economy.
Israel also plans to open embassies in both countries and appoint ambassadors.
Some countries, like Somalia, Egypt, Turkey, and Djibouti, are not happy with this decision and say it threatens Somalia's unity.
The United States, under President Donald Trump, has also opposed recognizing Somaliland, questioning its significance.
Somaliland is a self-declared republic with its own currency, passports, and armed forces, and its strategic location on the Gulf of Aden is important for regional and international interests.
Israel has become the first UN member state to officially recognize Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state, over three decades after its declaration of independence from Somalia in 1991.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar signed the recognition declaration for Israel, while Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi signed on behalf of his country.
Somaliland briefly enjoyed recognition by Israel and 34 other countries in 1960 before uniting with Somalia.
Israel plans to establish embassies in both countries and appoint ambassadors, with potential cooperation in agriculture, health, technology, and economic fields.
The recognition comes amid reports of talks between Somaliland and Israel regarding the potential resettlement of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip, and Somaliland's commitment to joining the Abraham Accords.
