ITR Filing for Super Senior Citizens: A Financial Guide
If you're 80 or older and have interest income, you usually need to file taxes.
Your income has to be above ₹5,00,000 to file under the old tax scheme, or above ₹3,00,000 under the new tax scheme.
Even though there is a deduction available for senior citizens in the old scheme, it's better to go for the new scheme because it'll save you money.
If you're married and your spouse is a senior citizen (60-79), the same filing rules apply, though their exemption is smaller.
This applies to both of you because your income is above the limit, and it's beneficial to choose the new tax regime in both your cases.
Super senior citizens (80+) with income exceeding limits must file ITR.
Income includes FD and savings account interest, and SCSS interest.
Senior citizens (60-79) must file if income exceeds ₹3,00,000 (new/old regimes).
New tax regime usually results in lower tax liability for seniors.
