Study Questions Whether Cats Affect Children’s Mental Health

Study Questions Whether Cats Affect Children’s Mental Health

A study looked at whether having a cat might be connected to children’s mental health.

It found differences that could be related to cats, but it did not prove that cats caused them.

Families may choose certain pets because of things already happening in the family.

Those family circumstances might also affect a child’s emotions or behavior.

This is called reverse causation or family-selection effects.

The researchers also talked about a parasite called Toxoplasma gondii.

People can become infected with this parasite, but the study did not show that it caused mental-health differences.

Claims connecting the parasite directly to serious psychiatric disorders are still being investigated.
