Lawmakers Seek Answers After Five Fort Meade Suicides

Five people who worked with Cyber Command or the National Security Agency died by suicide within one month.

The deaths were connected to Fort Meade.

Rep.

Sarah Elfreth said the situation was an urgent concern.

She represents the area near Fort Meade.

She also serves on the House Armed Services Committee.

Lawmakers are asking why the deaths were not first called a suicide cluster.

Some of the people who died were civilians.

The Defense Department’s current definition of a suicide cluster applies only to military personnel.

This difference may have affected how the deaths were classified.
