SiCSem Breaks Ground on India's First End-to-End Silicon Carbide Chip Plant in Odisha
A company called SiCSem is starting to build a new factory in Odisha to make special computer chips made of silicon carbide.
These chips are important for things that use a lot of electricity, like electric cars and clean energy.
This is the first time India will have a factory that does the whole process of making these chips.
The factory will be able to make many chips every year and is expected to be ready in a few years.
The government is supporting this project, and the company is even working with a local university to do research.
This is seen as a big step for India to make more of its own advanced technology and become a leader in electronics.
SiCSem has commenced construction for India's first end-to-end silicon carbide semiconductor production plant in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
The project involves an investment of approximately Rs 2,000 crore and is expected to be operational by 2027-28.
The facility will have an annual capacity to process 60,000 silicon carbide wafers and package about 9.6 crore units.
Union IT and Electronics Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the growth of India's electronics industry and urged aggressive pursuit of semiconductor manufacturing.
SiCSem is partnering with IIT Bhubaneswar to establish a semiconductor research lab as part of the initiative.
