How a Chandelier Drop Influenced Location Scouting for 'Hedda'
Imagine you're trying to find a very special old house for a movie!
The director and her team had a big job to find just the right one.
They had a list of crazy questions for the owners, like 'Can we shoot a gun off the roof?'
or 'Can we drop a big fancy light fixture called a chandelier?'
Asking these tough questions helped them quickly narrow down the many houses they looked at.
Finally, they found an amazing house that was perfect, with old stone and glass, and even a very old garden room.
The director even designed the chandelier that they ended up dropping safely inside!
It was important that the house felt grand and old, fitting for the story they wanted to tell.
The actress playing the main character, Hedda, was even able to drop the chandelier, but wasn't allowed to drink water inside, which is a funny detail about filming.
Director Nia DaCosta and her team used unconventional questions, like 'Can we drop a chandelier?', to scout locations for the film 'Hedda'.
The house chosen for 'Hedda' needed to possess a certain gravitas and be old enough to withstand dramatic on-set actions.
Production designer Cara Brower initially scouted around 200 houses, with director Nia DaCosta reviewing about five.
The selected house featured original stone, original glass, and a 300-year-old orangery.
Nia DaCosta wrote the adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's 'Hedda Gabler' with star Tessa Thompson in mind, starting the first draft after a rejected Sundance submission.
