SEBI Extends Deadlines for Index Derivative Rules for Bank Indices
Imagine certain stock market groups, called indices, that people can make bets on.
The government's financial watchdog, SEBI, wants to make sure these bets are fair and not too risky.
They have rules saying these index groups need to have enough different stocks (at least 14) and no single stock should be too powerful (one stock can't be more than 20% of the group, and the top three can't be more than 45%).
SEBI told exchanges to change the groups they already have instead of making new ones.
Some groups will be changed all at once, but one important group, Nifty Bank, will be changed slowly over four months to avoid causing big market swings.
The deadlines for making these changes have been pushed back to the end of 2025 for some groups and early 2026 for Nifty Bank.
This gives everyone more time to adjust.
SEBI has extended deadlines for new eligibility rules for indices used in derivatives trading.
New rules require indices to have at least 14 companies, with single stock weight capped at 20% and top three at 45%.
Stock exchanges were instructed to adjust existing indices rather than create new ones.
Deadlines are now December 31, 2025, for Bankex and FinNifty, and March 31, 2026, for Nifty Bank.
Nifty Bank will undergo gradual changes over four months to ensure market stability and smooth fund rebalancing.

Index Structure Requirements
Original SEBI Rules
Indices must have a minimum of 14 companies, with strict weight caps for single and top three companies (20% and 45% respectively), and follow a clear descending order of weights.
Market Participant Adjustments
Market participants are adjusting existing indices by modifying constituent weights to meet SEBI's criteria, preferring this method over creating entirely new indices to maintain liquidity and avoid disruption.
