Mediobanca CEO Nagel Resigns After Monte Paschi Takeover
The CEO of a big Italian bank called Mediobanca is leaving his job because another bank, Monte dei Paschi, is taking over.
Investors, including some big owners, agreed to sell their shares, letting Monte dei Paschi take control.
The outgoing CEO, who was in charge for 17 years, wasn't happy about the takeover and is stepping down with others on the board.
This deal will make a new, big bank in Italy, which the government wanted.
The new owners will choose a new board at a meeting in October.
The takeover values Mediobanca at around €17.5 billion.
Mediobanca CEO Alberto Nagel is resigning along with board members.
The move follows Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena's successful takeover bid.
Investors accepted Monte Paschi's offer, representing about 63% of Mediobanca shares.
Nagel was against the deal, which will create Italy's third-biggest bank.
The resignations will be effective from the date of the next annual meeting, Oct. 28.
