Courts Order Compensation for Train Accident Victims
Two families who lost their loved ones in train accidents have finally received compensation from the railway authorities.
In the first case, the Rajasthan High Court ordered the railways to pay Rs 8 lakh to the family of a man who died after falling from a train in 2017.
The railways had denied compensation because no ticket was found, but the court said that not having a ticket doesn't mean the man wasn't a passenger.
In the second case, the Supreme Court ensured that a widow received Rs 8.92 lakh after her husband died in a train accident in 2002.
The railways had initially denied her claim, saying her husband was of unsound mind, but the Supreme Court found this reasoning absurd and ordered the compensation to be paid.
Both cases highlight the courts' efforts to ensure justice for the families of train accident victims.
The Rajasthan High Court ordered the railway authorities to pay Rs 8 lakh to the family of a man who died after falling off a moving train in 2017.
The Supreme Court ordered the railways to pay Rs 8.92 lakh to a widow whose husband died in a train accident in 2002.
In both cases, the railways had initially denied compensation on the grounds of no ticket found and the deceased being of unsound mind, respectively.
The courts ruled that these reasons were not sufficient to deny compensation, especially in cases of accidental death.
The compensation in the Bihar case was paid after a long legal battle of 23 years, with the help of a pro bono lawyer and local authorities.
