Chinese Humanoid Robots Face Real-World Tests After Speed Records
China is holding a competition for humanoid robots.
Some robots ran faster than the fastest human 100-meter and 400-meter records.
However, the robots had trouble stopping safely after sprinting.
Other contests ask robots to charge electric vehicles, work in restaurants, move packages and connect cables.
These tasks imitate work in factories, warehouses, offices and emergencies.
More than 40% of the contests require robots to work without human control.
The tests check whether robots can see objects, use the right amount of force and fix mistakes.
Experts say fast running is not enough if robots cannot reliably help people with real jobs.
China’s five-day World Humanoid Robot Games began Saturday in Beijing with 51 events.
Two robots ran faster than Usain Bolt’s 9.58-second 100-meter world record, but struggled to brake.
A humanoid robot completed 400 meters in 39.7 seconds, ahead of Wayde van Niekerk’s 43.03-second record.
Scenario-based contests test EV charging, restaurant work, warehouse operations, emergency response and industrial assembly.
Executives and investors said the robots’ long-term value depends on reliably solving real-world customer problems after demonstrations.
- Who
- Humanoid robots, robotics companies, game organizers, Huawei and industry participants are involved.
- What
- The World Humanoid Robot Games are testing robots through sports and practical, work-like scenarios.
- When
- The five-day games began Saturday; the articles compare the results with the 2025 competition.
- Where
- Beijing, China.
- Why
- The games aim to test robots’ speed, dexterity, autonomy, precision and ability to handle real-world work problems.

Meaning of speed records
Technology Showcase Supporters
Faster running, along with sports such as weightlifting, tug-of-war, Tai Chi and tennis, demonstrates progress in robot hardware and capabilities.
Real-World Use Skeptics
Running and jumping records do not by themselves show that robots can improve workplace efficiency or solve customers’ problems.
Industrial significance
Technology Showcase Supporters
Investor Xu Qiaosheng said the more intense games place significant demands on battery management and thermal dissipation and have major significance for China’s industrial development.
Real-World Use Skeptics
Lumos Robotics Chief Executive Yu Chao said the longer-term value depends on robots solving problems in real-world end scenarios; simply running and jumping does not improve efficiency.
Autonomous performance
Technology Showcase Supporters
More than 40% of the contests require full autonomy, giving developers a demanding test of independent operation.
Real-World Use Skeptics
Small imperfections, such as wrongly angled cables, shifting packages, out-of-reach objects and missed steps, may expose whether robots can recover reliably without human intervention.
- Total events
- The games include 51 events: 30 sports competitions and 21 scenario-based contests.
- Autonomy requirement
- More than 40% of the contests require robots to operate fully autonomously; one article describes this as 21 contests.
- 100-meter result
- Two robots reportedly ran faster than Usain Bolt’s 9.58-second world record.
- 400-meter result
- One humanoid completed 400 meters in 39.7 seconds, compared with Wayde van Niekerk’s 43.03-second record.
- Braking problem
- The sprinting robots struggled to stop, so organizers placed thick mats several metres beyond the finish line.
- Practical challenges
- Events include EV charging, restaurant work, warehouse and material loading, emergency response, industrial assembly and cable connection.
- Technical abilities tested
- The challenges assess object recognition, positioning, force control, battery management, thermal dissipation and error recovery.
