Odisha Pilots IoT for Smart Water Management in Agriculture
Odisha is trying out new technology to help farmers use water more wisely.
They are using special sensors and a phone app, like a smart system for irrigation projects.
This helps make sure water goes to plants when they need it, not too much or too little.
It also helps farmers know about the weather so they can make good choices for their crops.
The state government wants to make sure everyone has enough water for farming, especially in places that don't get much rain.
They are also using solar power for some irrigation systems, which is good for the environment.
Some farmers are already seeing good results, like growing special crops and earning more money.
Odisha has piloted sensor-based IoT devices and a mobile app for optimizing water use in its Lift Irrigation Projects.
The initiative aims for real-time monitoring and efficient management of water delivery, promoting smart irrigation.
The Odisha Lift Irrigation Corporation (OLIC) has created an irrigation potential of 16.51 lakh hectares, benefiting over 15 lakh farmer families in 2024-25.
The state has completed 3,328 solar-powered deep bore wells, with a target of 9,000 more by December 2025.
Farmers in districts like Mayurbhanj are experiencing economic upliftment through diversified cropping supported by these projects, with one example earning Rs 40 lakh from strawberry cultivation.
